Action for a safe climate as loving our neighbour

Throughout the Bible, Christians are called to love our neighbours and to care for God’s Creation. Jesus’ connection with nature often came through in His teachings, and He wanted for all people to have fullness of life. We’re especially called to care for those who are poor, and to work for justice and peace in the world.

Right now, our communities from Hurstville to Henan are impacted by the pollution and human rights abuses that come from digging and burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

These fuels are burnt in cars, stovetops and power plants, and the pollution they produce is heating our planet.

Last year was the hottest year on record, and fossil fuel pollution is making extreme weather events worse and more frequent. Heatwaves, floods, and bushfires are a serious health and financial risk to us all, even more so for the poor and the elderly.

Meanwhile coal, oil and gas companies are profiting unfairly from the digging, burning and exporting of fossil fuels. These companies are supported by governments that keep approving new coal and gas projects. As followers of Jesus, we must challenge unjust power and help create a world where people and the earth thrive.

There are many ways that we can be part of the solutions. We can make positive lifestyle changes, we can use renewable energy, we can switch to banks and super funds that invest in climate solutions rather than fossil fuels, and we can get our governments to do better.

It is everyday people working together for the common good who are creating the change needed for a safe climate. To learn more and take action, visit Australian Religious Response to Climate Change at arrcc.org.au
