हिंदू परंपराओं और समाज में, हमें बताया जाता है कि सृष्टि के सभी पहलू और सभी जीवित प्राणी स्वाभाविक रूप से दिव्य हैं। हिंदू जीवन का मूलमंत्र हमारे प्रति, हमारे परिवारों के प्रति, हमारे समाज के प्रति, पृथ्वी के प्रति, स्वयं के प्रति और ईश्वर के प्रति हमारी कर्तव्य भावना है। हिंदू परंपराएं हमें बताती हैं कि जब हम दुनिया में अन्याय (अधर्म) देखते हैं, तो हमें सही कार्रवाई करनी चाहिए।

इस समय, पैरामैटा से लेकर मुंबई तक हम कोयला, तेल और गैस जैसे जीवाश्म ईंधन को खोदने और उसको जलाने से होने वाले प्रदूषण और मानवाधिकारों के हनन से प्रभावित है। ये ईंधन कारों, चूल्हों (स्टोवटॉप्स) और बिजली संयंत्रों में जलाए जाते हैं, और उनसे उत्पन्न प्रदूषण हमारे ग्रह को गर्म कर रहा है। 

पिछला वर्ष रिकॉर्ड पर सबसे अधिक गर्म वर्ष था, और जीवाश्म ईंधन प्रदूषण चरम मौसम की घटनाओं को बदतर बना रहा है और उनके होने की आवृति को बढ़ा रहा है। लू, बाढ़ और जंगल की आग हम सभी के लिए एक गंभीर स्वास्थ्य और वित्तीय जोखिम हैं, गरीबों और बुजुर्गों के लिए तो और भी अधिक।

इस बीच कोयला, तेल और गैस कंपनियाँ जीवाश्म ईंधन की खुदाई, जलाने और निर्यात से अनुचित लाभ कमा रही हैं। इन कंपनियों को सरकारों का समर्थन प्राप्त है जो नई कोयला और गैस परियोजनाओं को मंजूरी देती रहती हैं। स्वस्थ पर्यावरण के लिए और कोयला एवं गैस उद्योग के भ्रष्टाचार के खिलाफ आवाज़ उठा कर, हम भावी पीढ़ियों के प्रति अपना धर्म निभा रहे हैं।

ऐसे कई तरीके हैं जिनसे हम जलवायु परिवर्तन के समाधान का हिस्सा बन सकते हैं। हम जीवनशैली में सकारात्मक परिवर्तन कर सकते हैं, हम नवीकरणीय ऊर्जा का उपयोग कर सकते हैं, हम ऐसे बैंकों और सुपर फंडों का समर्थन कर सकते हैं जो जीवाश्म ईंधन के बजाय जलवायु समाधान में निवेश करते हैं, और हम उन अन्य लोगों के साथ शामिल हो सकते हैं जो हमारी सरकारों से बेहतर करने के लिए कह रहे हैं।

Taking right action for a safe climate

Across Hindu traditions and communities, we are told that all aspects of creation and all living beings are inherently Divine. The core of Hindu life is our sense of duty, to our families, to our communities, to the earth, to ourselves, and to the Divine. Hindu traditions tell us that when we see injustice (adharma) in the world, we must take the right action. 

Right now, our communities from Parramatta to Mumbai are impacted by the pollution and human rights abuses that come from digging and burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. These fuels are burnt in cars, stovetops and power plants, and the pollution they produce is heating our planet. 

Last year was the hottest year on record, and fossil fuel pollution is making extreme weather events worse and more frequent. Heatwaves, floods, and bushfires are a serious health and financial risk to us all, even more so for the poor and the elderly. 

Meanwhile coal, oil and gas companies are profiting unfairly from the digging, burning and exporting of fossil fuels. These companies are supported by governments that keep approving new coal and gas projects. By speaking up for a healthy environment and against corruption of the coal and gas industry, we are fulfilling our dharma towards future generations.

There are many ways that we can be part of the solutions to climate change. We can make positive lifestyle changes, we can use renewable energy, we can switch to banks and super funds that invest in climate solutions rather than fossil fuels, and we can join others who are asking our governments to do better.
